Marine cable insulation must withstand operating temperatures of up to 90°C. But when Heerema Marine Contractors wanted a cable capable of operating in temperatures of up to 200°C for their new project, the Sleipnir – the world’s largest heavy-lift crane, they met some difficulties.
Finding an internationally-approved material to do the job is easy enough. The challenge comes in finding a manufacturer with both a suitable production line and the willingness to apply for a marine-type approval at short notice.
Cables International already managed the Sleipnir’s marine cables, so when Heerema came to us for help, we got straight to work. We quickly found a manufacturer, designed a suitable cable using silicone rubber, and obtained Lloyd’s Register approval.
